Working with mirrors began quite by accident. One day while working with photographs, I reached for the mirror, held it to my body, and instinctively made a nude self-portrait. I held it to my flesh. It reflected the dark, empty, disheveled room, but nothing of me. From there, I began to explore all the way I could use this device to reflect the most intimate aspects of my life.
In the beginning, it was quite challenging. I knew exactly what I wanted to capture, However, the logistics were formidable.
This work is not simply self-portraiture — It is self-portraiture to the second power. Mirrors reveal aspects of the scene that aren’t visible from the camera’s point of view.
In the beginning, the images tended to be pastoral in nature, but as time progressed, the subject matter began to reveal more universal themes, such as the ‘Hero’s Journey’ for a woman at 70.
